How to calculate an overnight shift
An overnight shift crosses midnight, but the hours still add up from clock-in to clock-out. Enter your actual times and subtract only an unpaid break.
10:00 PM to 6:00 AM with a 30-minute break
From 10:00 PM to midnight is 2 hours. Midnight to 6:00 AM is another 6 hours. That makes 8 hours on the clock. Subtract a 30-minute unpaid break to get 7h 30m of paid time, or 7.50 decimal hours. If the break is paid, leave it out of the unpaid break field.
In HourVello, enter 10:00 PM as Clock in and 6:00 AM as Clock out on the date the shift starts. Because clock-out is earlier, the calculator treats it as the next day and shows “Ends next day.” The paid time is included with the shift’s start date.
A second example with minutes
11:30 PM to 7:15 AM is 7h 45m on the clock. With a 45-minute unpaid break, the paid total is 7h 00m. If you accidentally choose 7:15 PM instead, the shift becomes much longer. Check AM and PM whenever an overnight result looks wrong.
When a shift reaches a workweek boundary
HourVello attributes an overnight shift to its start date for its simplified totals. A real payroll workweek may split hours at a fixed day and time. The calculator warns when a shift crosses the end of the selected range or workweek; review the actual split before using an overtime estimate for payroll. Clock-time math also may differ from elapsed time when daylight-saving time changes.
